Last week, two more students took home the All-Star Student Award for their outstanding behaviour in Physical Education class, that earned them their culminating punches in their "making good choices" punch cards!

Alden is the first student in his class to receive this award. Alden always puts 100% effort into activities he partakes in during PE class, and he's also diligent at cleaning up and encouraging his classmates to do the same, at the end of class.

Ashlyn has also been stellar at cleaning up equipment at the end of class and helping her younger classmates to follow directions and be involved in all of our activities and games during class time.

Way to go, Alden and Ashlyn! Keep up the great work! :)

Wow! What a busy week we had last week, with All-Star Students in PE! We had THREE students get 20 punches in their "making good choices" punch cards, to wrap-up Week 10 of the school year! :)

Elton is has been making great choices in Phys Ed class, as well as outside of the classroom! He has been making healthier snack choices, has been confident in performing skills and other activities in class, and he can be an effective, positive role-model for his peers! :)

Drayson always tries his best in Phys Ed! Drayson is consistent in helping to tidy up the gym and put things away after class, and he never gives up when he's trying something new, no matter how frustrating it may be! :)

Jack always brings a super positive attitude into his Phys Ed classes and he's always ready for whatever activity we have planned. Jack is kind and caring to his classmates, and he's always picking up balls and equipment, even if no one else is! :)

Congratulations to these three awesome students; keep up the great work, guys! :)

School News

Zander took home the All-Star Student trophy today, after getting his 20th punch in his "making good choices" punch card.

Zander demonstrates his true athletic potential when he tries out new activities and commits to "getting it right" even if it's something new. He also helps clean up and encourages his peers to stay on task during P.E. class.

Congratulations on being the first All-Star Student of November, Zander; keep up the great work! :)

Mark your calendar!

We have ANOTHER All-Star Student in Physical Education (PE) to celebrate! :)

Kallan in Grade 1 is our SECOND All-Star PE Student this year...and this month! Kallan completed his 'making great choices' punch card on Tuesday, and took the trophy home for one night this week. Kallan is consistently principled, on-task and is super helpful tidying up in PE class. Way to go, Kallan; keep up the great work! :)

This year in Physical Education (PE) lessons, students' awesome behaviour is being recognized via punch cards! Each lesson, students have an opportunity to earn one or more punches in their punch card! Punches can be earned when students help clean-up, when they lend a helping hand, when they are safe risk-takers, and/or when they're going above and beyond (or just trying their best) to learn a new skill! Once a student gets 20 punches in their card, they get to take the All-Star Student trophy home, have a video posted on Seesaw, as well as some community recognition right here. They also get to choose a warm-up game/activity in their next lesson!

Leah in Grade 2 was our FIRST All-Star Phys Ed Student this year, when she completed her punch card last Friday! She took the All Star Student trophy home for the weekend and has returned it; who will be taking our trophy home for a victorious sleepover next?!
Keep up the great work, Leah! :)

Aristotle was a lover of nature, and found great intellect in exploring its theories and connecting with its awesomeness! Like Aristotle, I find peace of mind and try to connect with nature at least for a few minutes every day - whether it be paddling on the water, or appreciating the sound of the wind in the trees on a hike.

Hiking here in Nova Scotia, specifically in Pictou County, is something that's tailored to any level of adventure. AllTrails is a site that maps out different hikes all around our province (and beyond!) and hopefully more and more hikes will be added back to its database overtime! You can check out the site/app here:

Hike Nova Scotia is another great resource to inspire you to get outside! There's a 'Hiker Challenge' that encourages people of all ages to complete different hikes and apply for badges online! I'd love to get some of our Pictou Landing First Nation Community hikes listed, so that we can have our students earning badges, and promoting it to their friends and families, as well! You can learn more about the 'Hiker Challenge' here:

Hike Nova Scotia also offers a variety of guided hikes, training and other resources. You can see my correspondence with Janet Barlow (Executive Director of Hike Nova Scotia) below:

Hi Melinda,
Thanks for contacting Hike NS. It sounds like you have some great ideas and opportunities to get students more active at Pictou Landing. Here at Hike NS we don't have the staff or volunteer capacity to send someone out to run a session or hike for a class or classes, but we do have some resources/programs that might be useful for you. I'll give you a listing below. Please let me know if anything resonates. Thanks!

Training for Staff & Volunteers
Public courses are offered annually (costs vary). For a flat fee, we can arrange a closed course for your staff/volunteers. Courses include:

  • Re-Connecting with Nature workshop: A one-day, hands-on workshop held mostly outdoors to improve an adult’s ability to lead and share an appreciation and understanding of nature with children and youth.
  • Field Leader - Hiking course: A two-day course with a systematic approach to planning and managing a one-day hiking activity (a nationally certified Outdoor Council of Canada course). Winter and overnight modules are available that complement this course.
  • Navigation Maps & Compass course: A two-day course with a comprehensive introduction to navigation using maps and compass. (a nationally certified Outdoor Council of Canada course).
  • Intro to Hiking: Outdoor Council of Canada GO Hike (Get Out Hike) - Offer a series of hikes where participants learn about what to expect, how to prepare and what to wear for hiking.
  • Look under Courses & Workshops at
Guided Hike Series
We have a slate of 50 public guided hikes lined up this fall - there are some in Pictou County as well. We'll have winter hikes too.

Hiker Challenge
The Hiker Challenge is all about inspiring, motivating and rewarding new and experienced hikers to start hiking or to hike more. The reward for completing each of the five challenges is a badge, being listed on our Honour Roll and each season we’ll do a prize draw from The Trail Shop for badge earners. There is Youth Badge as well.
Hiking for Youth & Families Page
We have lots of resources and ideas on this page:

In addition to helping you connect with nature, there are many other health benefits from hiking! If you don't believe me, maybe this HuffPost article will convince you to get outside this week, and HIKE! :)
